About Te Haerenga o Ngā Tamariki

Our journey

In partnership with schools, teachers, and students, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi initially developed Te Haerenga o ngā Tamariki.  This is now owned and managed by Greater Wellington.

The goal of Te Haerenga o ngā Tamariki is to collect data about how primary school children in our rohe (region) get to school. With more data about how students travel, we can make better decisions around road safety and active travel programmes.

This tool supports student agency with ākonga (students) entering the data themselves.  Analysing data helps spark classroom discussions and increases awareness about how travel choice impacts on our environment.

If you want to understand how to use Te Haerenga o Ngā Tamariki in your school or council, please contact  schooltravel@gw.govt.nz.

The programme values of Te Haerenga o Ngā Tamariki

Anonymous and secure – multiple security measures in the system ensure individual children cannot be identified from the data they enter.

Child-led – ākonga tell us how they get to kura (school) by entering their own travel data. We want them to be at the centre of the process and be active participants.

Quick and easy – participation is simple and not disruptive to teachers and the school day.

Accessible and without judgment – all students must be able to participate (or not) in the programme.  There will be no judgement placed on children, whatever their mode of travel.

Every entry counts – all trips entered help to build a picture of how our ākonga travel to kura across our rohe.

Teacher friendly – we know teachers are busy.  Te Haerenga o ngā Tamariki needs to be flexible enough to meet the needs of individual classes, their school and kaupapa. Our step by step guide helps to integrate into your  learning objectives.

Feedback – we welcome feedback on your experiences using Te Haerenga o ngā Tamariki including any suggestions for improvements.
